Low-Cost IR Based Water Level Monitoring Device

The main aim is to develop a system for continuous monitoring of river water parameters at remote places using wireless sensor networks with low power consumption, low-cost and high detection accuracy. For now, an effort was made to develop a low-cost water level sensor and improve its accuracy.

This device is based on IR proximity sensor. IR sensor array is fixed onto a shaft. A floating unit is provided which moves up and down with the rise and fall of the water level. A linear bearing makes the motion of the floating unit smooth and keeps it perpendicular to the sensor to eliminate error due to the tilt of the surface.

IR sensor will detect the position of the floating unit and send the data to the microcontroller. The microcontroller receives raw data and calculates distance from it.

In order to avoid interference from other light source, the sensor setup is housed in a non transparent casing.
